Let's be honest. Calgary in winter is a lot. It's dark at 5, your car makes a noise you've decided not to investigate, and December has already eaten your bank account. But staying home until April is not a personality.
Good news: some of the best things to do in this city cost exactly zero dollars. Here's your free winter plan. You're welcome.
Pretend you're on vacation at Devonian Gardens
Somewhere above the shoppers on the fourth floor of The CORE, there's a full-on indoor garden with plants, fish and actual greenery. In November. In Calgary. It's free to walk in, and its hours follow The CORE's, so go during mall hours.
Bring a coffee, stand near a palm, close your eyes. That's basically Mexico. Your credit card stays in your pocket where it belongs.
Skate like it's a Tim Hortons commercial
The City of Calgary's outdoor rinks are free, first come, first served. The star of the show is the Bowness Park lagoon, where the City runs free skating from about mid-November to mid-March, weather permitting (Chinooks have opinions).
Skates not included: rentals on site cost extra. But gliding around in a toque while you pretend you never fell as a child? Free. Check calgary.ca/rinks for ice conditions before you go, because nobody wants to skate on soup.
Get cultured at Free First Thursday
Contemporary Calgary opens its doors for free from 5 to 9 PM on the first Thursday of most months (not January). There's art, there's usually something extra going on, and there's a very real chance you'll say "hmm, interesting" while nodding slowly. Very sophisticated of you.
The next one is Thursday, Nov 5. It's at 701 11 St SW, a 3-minute walk from the Downtown West–Kerby CTrain station. See the details.
Look at lights until you feel festive
The Lions Festival of Lights at Confederation Park (14 St NW, north of 24 Ave NW) has been making Calgarians say "ooooh" for decades, and it's free. In recent years it has lit up from late November into early January. The 2026 dates aren't out yet, so keep an eye on lionsfestivaloflights.ca.
Pro move: hot chocolate in a thermos. You're not paying $7 for it. Not this winter.
Free parties (that's not a typo)
Want a night out that doesn't need a payment plan? A few Calgary spots run free nights through the season:
- Commonwealth Bar in the Beltline has free-RSVP nights, including Common Saturdays (Nov 14 and more Saturdays into December) and World Famous Fridays rap night (Nov 20 and on). RSVP free, dance badly, go home happy.
- Born Brewing Co. in Manchester Industrial is doing Brewery BINGO (Nov 19), a Doughnut Party (Nov 27) and a Holiday Speakeasy (Dec 11), all free to get in. Doughnuts and beer in one building. Science has peaked.
- Calgary Co-op Wine Spirits Beer runs free Sip 'N Shop tastings: Oakridge (Nov 14), Crowfoot (Nov 28), Midtown (Dec 5), and Beddington and Shawnessy (Dec 12). Taste first, commit later. Like dating, but with wine.
Bonus round
- Heritage Park hosts Culturally Speaking, a free evening on Nov 18 and Dec 9 at 7 PM.
- Scared of public speaking? SpeakUpside Toastmasters runs a free weekly session downtown, Wednesdays at noon in November. Face the fear. Then go skate it off.
