Where to see live comedy in Calgary (because your group chat isn't that funny)

Your friends think they're hilarious. They are not. That one guy still quotes the same movie from 2009. You deserve professionals.

Calgary has a seriously good comedy scene: stand-up on a Wednesday for less than a sandwich, improv that's different every single night, and big-name tours rolling through. Here's where to go, what's coming up, and what it'll cost you.

The Laugh Shop: the best deal in town

5940 Blackfoot Trail SE

Wednesday stand-up at The Laugh Shop starts at $7.50. That's less than a fancy latte, and a latte has never once made you snort. Coming up: Jebb Fink (Nov 11), Ken Valgardson (Nov 25), Efthimios Nasiopoulos (Dec 2) and Mike Lynch (Dec 9).

Want bigger names? Their special events bring in touring headliners: Ryan Long (Nov 15, from $34.95), Bo Johnson (Nov 19, from $25), T.J. Miller (Nov 20, from $34.95) and Luke Kidgell (Dec 1, from $45). 18+, so leave the kids with someone who owes you a favour.

Comedy Cave: Monday nights, sorted

1020 8 Ave SW · 3-minute walk from Downtown West–Kerby station

Mondays are the worst day of the week. The Comedy Cave fixed that. Shows start at 7:30 PM from $15, with Brady Matthews (Nov 9), Ryan Williams (Nov 16), Jamar Neighbors (Nov 23) and Nik Macik (Nov 30) on deck.

Got a soft spot for animals? On Thursday, Nov 5, the Cave hosts a Calgary Humane Society comedy night fundraiser (from $50). Laugh, give back, feel smug about it all week. 18+.

The Attic Bar & Stage: comedy upstairs in Inglewood

1413 9 Ave SE

Laugh Loft Comedy at The Attic is the cozy, intimate kind of comedy night where you can actually see the comedian's face (and they can see yours, so maybe don't check your phone). Next up: Sunday, Nov 15 at 7:30 PM, from $10.50.

Make a weekend of it: the same stage does drag and burlesque too, like Carly's Angels (Nov 14) and the Devilled Legs Drag Brunch (Nov 15). Inglewood really said "we have range."

Kinkonauts: improv in the Beltline

834 11 Ave SW · 7-minute walk from 8th Street SW station

Improv is comedy with no script and no safety net, which is either thrilling or terrifying depending on how many coffees the cast had. At the Kinkonauts, shows like Show & Tell (Nov 6), Sundays Unplugged (Nov 8) and Actually, I Love You: An Improvised Holiday Romance (Nov 13) are $10. There's also a Late Night at the Kinkonauts show on Nov 6 at 9 PM for the night owls.

Secretly want to be the funny one? They run six-week improv classes too. Your group chat won't know what hit it.

Loose Moose Theatre: the improv legends

1235 26 Ave SE

Loose Moose is a Calgary improv institution, and it's still going strong. Catch In Another Life… (Nov 6, 8 PM) or the Secret Impro Show (Nov 7, 8 PM), both under $16. Bringing the kids? The 3 Pigs (Nov 8, 1 PM) is a family show, under $20. Yes, comedy for children exists, and no, it does not involve your uncle.

The big shows

When the famous people come to town:

  • Matt Puzhitsky's Slavic Comedy Tour: The Polaris Theatre, Nov 7 (from $35)
  • Killers of Kill Tony: Grey Eagle Event Centre, Nov 27
  • Jim Jefferies: Son Of A Carpenter: Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium, Dec 5
  • Adam Ray: WHO IS ME Tour: Grey Eagle Event Centre, Dec 5

Big tours sell out, so if you've been "thinking about it," stop thinking.

The chaotic wildcard

Sip/Swap & Stand-Up at the Windsor Rose in Inglewood (Nov 6, 6 PM, from $55) is a clothing swap, drinks and stand-up all in one night. Leave with new jeans and sore abs. Efficient.

Never miss a funny night again
